Guide to an Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience

The pure water is a central part of your floaing sauna experience. Mixing hot sauna and chill lake water is good for your health and well-being! 80% of Finns go to the sauna once a week. Sauna is a tradition, which has passed on from one generation to the next for thousands of years. In 2020, Finland’s sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

These tips will help you make the most of the sauna:

1. Reserve a lot of time for sauna bathing. There is no hurry, and don’t use timers or mobile phones. Avoid big meals before the sauna, but drink water to stay hydrated.
2. Before entering the sauna, take a shower and remove any makeup.
3. Enter the sauna with an open mind. Slow down your breath. The warmth of the sauna will help you connect with yourself and your senses.
4. Finns typically bathe naked. You can also wrap a towel around your body. Never wear gym shorts or underwear in sauna. Remember to sit on top of a bench towel.
5. Relax. Listen to your body and trust your feelings. It is normal to sweat. You may go down to the lower bench or outside to cool off, anytime you wish.
6. When you are used to the heat of the sauna, create steam by throwing water onto the heater. Finns call this “löyly” and it is the essence of the sauna experience. Enjoy the feeling on your skin.
7. Have a cold shower or a dip in the lake whenever you feel like it. In the Houseboat, you have the unique option to cool down in one of the many Finnish lakes.
8. Sit down in the deck area or in the living room and enjoy the great feeling! Drink water to stay hydrated.
9. Go back into the sauna and repeat as many times as you wish.
10. Wash yourself after the sauna bathing.
11. Take time to relax after the sauna.
12. Have a good night’s sleep!
